| Home | Whagarei is a
port of entry.(click here for link to NZ Customs homepage) COASTAL The tidal range is less than 3 metres and strong tidal streams only occur in the harbours. Generally the coast is deep water with few outlying dangers. Shipping normally keeps five miles off the coast except for a few local ships. Cray pots and longline fishing is common along the coast. Pots and buoys are usually orange. Anchorage's and harbours are available all along the coast however you should take care in onshore winds. Mangawhai heads, Parengarenga, Nungaruru and any exposed beaches can be dangerous in easterly conditions. Offshore islands and steep too coastline are subject to wind gusts and wind channelling around the lee sides. In the summer a strong NE sea breeze is common on fine weather. The climate is mild. Temperatures in summer range from 18 to 28 degrees C and in winter from 8 to 20 degrees C. New Zealand weather can change rapidly and it is prudent to be prepared for sudden changes. | WHANGAREI The deep water entrance is safe in all weather however it is prudent not to approach when there is a strong wind against the tide. All dangers in the approaches are easily visible apart from a rock just off the island east of Ocean Beach. The bouyage system is IALA system A, Green to Starboard, and the main ship channel is well marked. Above Marsden Point the beacons can be confusing and it is best to proceed in daylight. It is best to keep to the ship channel entering as the harbour has extensive sand bars and flats. The open bays such as Mclouds Bay and Parua Bay all have sandbars in the centre. The deeper water is generally along the shoreline. The best all weather anchorage is The Nook in Parua Bay. Study the chart as there are shallows in the approaches to Parua Bay. All facilities for any size vessel including super yachts and ship repair are available in Whangarei. Several yards specialise in super yacht construction and maintenance. Prices are reasonable for hardstand, berthage and boatbuilding. Overseas visitors will be impressed by the prices, and the quality of workmanship, available in Whangarei. Spares are available locally or can be couriered overnight from Auckland. |
